Citysearch Editorial Review – The atmosphere is relaxed and the sushi is standard at this Japanese spot. One strip of exposed brick might remind you that you're in Nolita, but the only other noticeable design accents are the few small frames peppering mostly bare, butter yellow walls. What makes Mottsu unique is its lack of pretension in this sometimes pretentious ‘hood. Locals go for reliable fare and a break from the 30-minute waits typical of nearby tourist-trap restaurants. A lengthy menu dominated by basic sushi and sas... read more
Ever declining quality – I used to love to eat at Mottsu, where a very friendly staff of waitresses would always great us. But in the last 2 years this lovely staff has been replaced by an all male one, which is not very accomodating nor extremely friendly. The sushi has also declined in quality, especially since the prices are not extremely reasonable for what you get. I would rather pay a little more and have amazing sushi at Blue Ribbon Sushi or go the truly cheaper route near St. Mark's place where all the Japanese resta... read more
Great twilight meal deal – Friday night and we needed a quick bite before going out. The 5-7pm meal deal was a pleasant surprise. For $15 we dined on delicious tiny smoked hor d'ouevres, fresh sashimi, great sushi (my man had chicken teriyaki), miso soup (or salad), green tea ice cream and green tea. Great value and not too filling. We will indeed be back.
Great Food – I never have to wait more then 10 minutes to be seated. Food is great. Service is prompt. Best Rolls I've had in the city. If you feel adventurous, order your non standard Japanese dishes.
Penguins eat fish – Unlike most other neighboring restaurants, Mottsu offers a nice, quiet relief to the pretentious, overbearing "chic" restaurants in Nolita. Mottsu offers a good selection of fresh sushi and kitchen entrees for a reasonable price.
Yuk! – Mottsu is getting worse and worse! The food is beyond terrible quality wise. The sushi is fishy and the pieces small, the entrees smell like institution food. Very disappointed.
Good sushi for a good deal – I have been going to Mottsu for years and not once have I ever been disappointed. I would recommend their tuna & salmon sushi and sashimi. Their rolls are not that fabulous. The atmosphere is clean and non-pretentious and the wait staff friendly.
a great local – Every neighborhood deserves a reliable local Japanese restaurant and this is mine. I order from here all the time and am never disappointed. The rolls are packed and the duck appetizer is mouth watering. A great place with value to match.
Yummy! – The sushi is so fresh and so reasonably priced, I can't wait to go back!
