Motorcycle Works Ltd. Love him or leave him, Tom knows what he's doing. – Let me first say that I was forewarned before heading to Motorcycle Works to service my 1970 Triumph Bonneville. "He's moody, can be hard to get service, etc." Tom can definitely be abrasive if your ego needs stroked. He tells you exactly how it is, how much it will take to fix, and whether or not he feels the bike is worthy of his service. I can see what people mean by his moodiness, but I thought it was kind of endearing. It took about 2 weeks for hi... read more

Motorcycle Works Limited, a reconsideration – About a year ago I wrote a review ("Soup N*zi") about how impossible and difficult Tom was. Well, he admits (and loves) being the "Soup N*zi", but took issue with my characterization of him as a 'fraud'. Here is my reconsideration, after a chat with him today: He is a bit Jekyll/Hyde: doesn't like being disturbed during his weekday work hours (call first. i repeat, call first.), but is approachable and helpful during his Saturday 'open to the public' Dr Jekyll phase. Even a bit c... read more

Good mechanic. Long wait to be serviced. Call ahead; do not "drop by" – Tom the mechanic is well-regarded in the neighborhood. He prefers you to call ahead rather than "drop by." Although the door (or garage door) is open, that does not mean he is available to talk. "I don't care if you happen to be in the neighborhood, don't drop by. Call me." Saturdays 9am-1pm he does inspections. First come, first serve; you may call ahead to check. He does not like repeat offenders bringing their neglected bikes; he will leave you at the... read more

Traditional, integral business – Go to M/C Works with a purpose: to have a certain service performed on your bike. If you are unsure of the procedures your machine requires, and you wish for it to run and fully operate soundly, then admit the limitations of overview on your part. Be sure to ask for a complete treatment of maintenance. One might assume the user's awareness of existing conditions. A lot goes into the smooth functioning of a motorcycle, especially mine (BMW R 65 LS), as I have come to understand--thanks to Tom.... read more

best motor cycle repair place in new york city – Motor cycle works maintains my bmw K bike in an excellent manner: very precise and when a service detail cannot be performed i am told why and what the other options are. In addition, my 1964 bmw R27, the bike i inherited from my father, was restaured in a very professional way and at a reasonable price, bearing in mind the time it takes to find parts & overhaul and repair the carburator, engine etc etc. The thumping sound it makes again is pure poetry...... What i appreciate ... read more

Fantastic Mechanic – I have been goign to Tom for over three years now. He has a wealth of knowledge and the first time I was there with my Honda Nighthawk he explained a whole bunch of stuff to me. Technically he is excellent. As other reviewers say he can be a bit moody, but I am sure that everyone going there do so for his professional skills, and not his inter-personal ones. You cannot walk in without an appointment. The guy works alone and has limited storage space so cant keep many bikes there. He does not mind if you ... read more

Good mechanic – He seems to evoke extreme responses - people either dislike him or revere him as a mechanical god. The truth is in between. He's a good mechanic, I've never had any problem with his work, and I trust him - he doesn't rip you off (certainly he charges less than the exorbitant Manhattan BMW!). It is sometimes hard to get an appointment. In a good mood he's really helpful, but other times it's like trying to deal with an irritable rock star or an exclusive maitre'd. If you're thick-skinned or female, you'll prob... read more

Best BMW motorcycle mechanic anywhere. Leave ego at the door. – I have taken my BMW motorcycle to Tom for over four years. I would not trust anyone else to touch my motorcycle. I have spent thousands of dollars on my classic BMW at Motorcyle Works Limited, and even though it hurt when I had to pay (cash only) I knew that one truly great (albeit moody) mechanic worked on it. Appointments only. A truly unique, New York City experience.

Motorcycle Works doesn't work. – Tom was recommended to me as a great mechanic, and I went there and spent $1800 on my bike. He treated me like I was asking him a favor to fix my bike and after that it still leaks oil and the battery dies all the time.....you figure out if you can trust this guy. When I called him to ask him to check the bike one more time (paid), he told me to go to see the BMW dealer....not very accountable. His mood changes with the weather, so he may be nice to you at first...but beware. He made me feel ... read more
