Great place and a beautiful area. Call ahead to make a reservation. I was surprised how many other people were there. It's a 1hr drive from downtown Helena, but a nice drive. Took 3 of us 2 hrs to screen the material into the six buckets. Then they will run it through a machine and concentrate it down to @ 40-50lbs. You can either go through the concentrate there at a few tables they have set up. Or take it home. Grateful to have the chance to find some raw sapphire during the winter months this year.
Great family place. Good set up for customers. The family who runs the mine are wonderful ppl and the kids offered us all frozen otter pops in the afternoon.
We had soooo much fun. The people in charge were very helpful and friendly. It was a lot of work for us, but we are 72 and have some health issues. We were rather slow, but they were very patient even when we were the last ones there. We found a few sapphires, some agate and one garnet so far. We had too bring a bag home with over half of our concentrate to go through at home. I am sure we will find more.
It's a bit of work but worth it. It's so fun to find the stones. The workers are so nice and helpful, Matt and Sierra you guys are the best! We found quite a few stones multiple different colors. We will be returning when we are in the area again. Be prepared to get dirty, sweaty and take sunscreen. We also meet Bruce who showed us a bit more of their operation and it was informative and interesting.
Great place had a great time with the family. Found some good sapphires. Would go again.
