My mother was in home hospice care. My sister lived with her. My mother passed and 3 months later my sister took all my mothers meds and she also passed away. I'm a bit confused as to why they failed to take away the old hospice meds for my mother (I am in far away in TX). They also had bereavement counseling and I found that they really did not connect together. Perhaps if they retried, I don't know. The worker said she would keep in touch with my wife about my sisters progress, but of course that never happened either.

I was in palliative care for 4 years, I had abdominal surgery , and was referred there. They overprescribed oxycodone by 100%, they converted me from morphine to oxycodone , their math was wrong, I needed to be weened off it . Towards the end of 4 years I was prescribed near 400 mg a day, it was a ball and chains , I was withdrawing every 2 hours, their answer was more opioids . I had to go to detox and take subuxone for the rest of my life, as I developed an acute opioid withdrawal syndrome , that amount of opioids damaged ... read more

I want to warn anyone considering hospice at home to do your research. You may not know there are alternatives, but there are. My mother was being treated for stage 4 colon cancer and when her treatment options ended she opted for hospice at home. Before being released from Southern Ocean Medical Center we were approached by a Meridian Hospice representative. No options were even mentioned. And, as soon as my mother was released a hospice nurse and social worker were sent to her home to sign her up. I know there are good hos... read more
