When brothers George and William McKinnon went their separate ways in the early 60's, George McKinnon opened McKinnon's Meat Market in Somerville's Davis Square with his friend and protege, Jimmy Kontos. A few years later, in 1965, Kontos purchased the Davis Square landmark from McKinnon, and ran Somerville's hometown favorite butcher shoppe for the next 50 years. Decent meat at crazy prices – Getting rid of my car while living in Davis Sq, the one thing I expected to find a serious hassle was getting groceries. There's a 24 hour grocery store down at Porter, not that far away, but if I'm taking the T home from work, I want to be able to get out at Davis and get everything on my way home.
