Waste reacts in one of three ways after reaching your septic tank: it sinks (inorganic sludge), floats (hair and fibers), or comprises a middle layer of dissolved matter. This middle layer is what makes its way to the drain or leach field on your property.
One type of septic tank leaching system is a trench system, also known as a "leaching field," "drain field," or "finger system." This type of system consists of a network of perforated pipes laid in a gravel-lined trench.
Garbage disposals are not recommended for homes with septic systems. The finely ground products will float on the surface of the water and make their way into and clog lines. Consider composting vegetable matter and disposing of animal by-products.
If you have septic system pipes that are broken, leaking, crushed, or otherwise worn, this needs to be repaired as soon as possible. Common causes of pipe issues include deterioration and root interference.
Did you know that you should never build or pave over a drain-field? Your drain field plays a large part in decomposing waste after it has passed through your tank and needs to be left unobstructed to filter the waste water properly.
