I was Karen's involuntary client for ten years. I never would have been her client willingly. And it has taken me ten more years to really understand the damage that a "dual relationship" can do. A dual relationship is when a therapist or counsellor uses a family member as a client. This would still be ethically problematic even with the "client's" enthusiastic consent, and I never gave it. Not at 19 when it began, and not at 29 when I ended it.

“Acres of Skin: Human Experiments at Holmesburg Prison” is a 1998 book by Allen Hornblum. The book documents clinical non-therapeutic medical experiments on prison inmates at Holmesburg Prison in Philadelphia from 1951 to 1974, conducted under the direction of dermatologist Albert Kligman. The title of the book is a reference to Kligman's reaction on seeing hundreds of prisoners when he entered the prison: "All I saw before me were acres of skin" ... When I was still living in Ashland, I had some guy who did cold reading literally take one look at me and say, "You've been sexually abused." It was that obvious to a man who read BODY LANGUAGE FOR DOLLAR BILLS. But Karen, no matter how many times I saw her in person, never caught on to that. Talk about being under-qualified!
