Matsu Japanese Restaurant

4.3

About this business

Pale pine accents, sake jars and bonsai trees all work to add authentic Japanese appeal to this dining experience. It is common for the sushi chef to literally shout a greeting when you enter, so do not let him catch you off guard. Be prepared to relax and enjoy a pleasant evening with excellent hospitality. Stick with the sushi or try the warm eel with a California roll if you are feeling adventurous. The menu is not kid-friendly but it is perfect for couples spending a child-free evening out.

We have been long term fans of Matsu. Always good service, happy service and great food. No complaints and have steered many customers to Matsu. Today, I am sorry to say they have lost this customer. Among many menu items we ordered this early evening was calamari salad which came to us frozen. It still had ice crystals. I demonstrated to the waitress and asked that they remove it from the check. They obliged and did not charge us for subpar food but mgmt. never came to the table to apologize, offer another item, or provide ... read more

This is a nice comfortable place to eat sushi. I have lived in Southeast Asia and have had sushi in Japan, mainland and island, in Korea, and in the PI. I enjoy the look, feel, and taste of the restaurant and the sushi, itself. I eat sushi on a weekly basis and my husband chose to bring me here for our anniversary dinner; it seems to have become a tradition in our three years of marriage. It was a great meal and the staff is wonderful.

Always Great Sushi – My wife and I have been going to Matsu for almost 7 years now. The sushi is always top notch. We have tried many sushi places in Texas and California and Matsu is the best so far. The sushi is also really cheap during their happy hour to boot.

Best Sushi In North Houston – We needed a new sushi place because we moved and found Matsu. This is, by far, the best sushi restaurant I have ever been to (in North Houston). We have tried others and none have been able to compete. The employees are very nice and accommodating. I may not have had sushi in Japan or am a huge connoisseur of sushi but I DO know the basics of quality sushi/sashimi. I have a friend who actually has had sushi in Japan and he definitely recommends this place. It is ALWAYS fresh and made with care. ... read more

Editorial Review – Primarily a sushi bar, this charming north Houston restaurant also serves select Japanese entrees prepared in the kitchen.

Excellent for outer Houston – I was visiting Houston from Los Angeles where we have fabulous sushi which puts most sushi in other cities in the USA to shame. I have also lived in Japan and had the real thing. Matsu is very good. The prices are incredibly low for the quality of fish and amount of food. basil4prez said it was high - the sashimi lunch box is 9.95, nice sashimi, tempura, rice, salad, soup, fruit etc. I had my 22 month old son with me and they were very accommodating, he wasn't in a good mood when we got there bu... read more

Great Sushi – I eat at Matsu about twice a month. It is my favorite place for sushi. I am a sushi novice and so I like the New York Roll and California Roll the best. My daughter and I always get fried ice cream, as it is the perfect treat. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is relaxing and very clean.

Great Sushi – We have been to many, many Sushi restaraunts, and have found that Matsu is right up there with the best. Everything is fresh and well prepared, the chefs are friendly and creative. The Sashimi is great and we loved the Bungee Roll.

Another Proud Sushi Restaurant – I've visited Matsu only once, but found it to be just average. I found their Spider and Caterpillar rolls to be of small proportion and unexciting. Thinking I had ordered poorly. I motioned for the waitress, who seemed uninterested in a tip, and started ordering signature rolls off of a separate menu (rocket and coco roll). I found the rocket roll was a bit more to my liking, but the coco roll recommended by my waitress was not. If I remember correctly the coco roll as a tuna roll that was di... read more
