As one of the first restaurants to lead the Meatpacking District's revival, Macelleria has proven itself to be a staple in an ever-changing neighborhood. Owned and operated by Violetta and Sergio Bitici, Macelleria's rustic, Northern Italian cuisine never disappoints. Using only the finest meats and home-made pastas, each visit to Macelleria is like sitting in on a Tuscan grandmother's Sunday dinner. Drop by and you're likely to see Robert DeNiro or Jay-Z dining in the restaurant's wine cellar, constructed in-part using a 16... read more

Great dinner spot! – I was invited to Macelleria as a guest for a special event last week and decided I needed to write a review on City Search in order to comment on what a great experience it was. We had our own tables down in the "wine cellar" which had the perfect atmosphere for a small event. The food was incredible and I didn't hear a single person walk away that night without raving about the the family style anti-pasta or the the delicious entrees. The wait staff were very professional and prompt. In a city filled wi... read more
Best experience: exceptional food, service, atmosphere – I work for Team In Training and we needed to organize a very important evening for some of our participants. Working with restaurants in New York proved more challenging than I had anticipated. We are a non-profit organization so price is very important to us as we want the best experience at the most reasonable price. The only place that was able to meet those two standards was Macelleria. The 'experience' was phenomenal. Everything from the way Katie managed our even... read more
Was this place really best in 2007 by the citysearch audience? (part 4) – the waiter comes back to say it'll be one more minute and we'll have it, and i said, "sorry we don't want it anymore. please just charge us for what we've had, but we don't want that steak." he immediately walks away, with a smile of course, and gets the owner. the owner is a tall older italian guy with a heavy italian accent. owner: "what's the matter?" me: "we ordered our steak medium. it came out raw, not rare. we already sent it back once with no s... read more
Was this place really best in 2007 by the citysearch audience? (part 3) – they take it back to cook some more. but even then, you can tell that those waiters were the type that nothing is wrong. almost like they try to brainwash you that this is the best experience of your life eating at their restaurant. i'd expect someone to be at least somewhat apologetic that the steak wasn't even undercooked; it was not cooked at all. steak comes back out. plate is hot, new serving silverware with it, so it appears to be promising. i fl... read more
Was this place really best in 2007 by the citysearch audience? (part 1) – i made dinner reserves for myself and my roommate last night (it's a christmas tradition instead of buying presents for each other). so i pick what citysearch had as the #1 steak for 2007 chosen by the audience. they also had the editors pick for 2007 (strip house), which i had been to. i figured if the editor's pick is solid AND this is the audience picking, so we're talking over many people's answers, this place came out to be the best, let's go here... read more
Was this place really best in 2007 by the citysearch audience? (part 2) – the food finally arrives. the potatoes are nice and crispy. the creamed spinach was lacking flavor and consistency. it was far too funny, and the spincah was far too undercooked for what I am used to with creamed spinach. it was almost like they just mixed some frozen spinach with heavy cream, instead of letting it actually combine in a pan. our delicious medium cooked steak then arrives. and what do you know? it's pre-cut too. that was awesome because... read more
Best steak in the city – I know it's a lot to say, but the porterhouse for 2 here is simply THE best steak in the city, putting it's competition in new york (and in brooklyn) to the side. If you love quality meat this is the place to go. The staff is very attentive and engaging and the selection of Italian wine is phenominal.
Awesome steak, service is hitor miss – I go to Maceleria from time to time. The food is always excellent, but the service is hitor miss, especially on the weekends. This past weekend we went and were put on the waitlist. We were told 5 minutes, but after 20 minutes we went to ask how much longer. The hostess seemed clueless and said she had to talk with her manager, an older Italian gentleman. He was very gruff and told us "not much longer". We found his demeanor to be rude and offputting, and he couldn't even tell us how lo... read more
Ok Italian food and bad service – a) Italian food was very ok (I'm Italian and so were the 4 other people), steaks were just normal ones you could make at home b) Hostess was uptight and not very nice c) The Italian accent waiter was extremely rude and not useful, still he pretended the tip I went on a Sunday night (09/09/07, 85?F) with my fiancee, 2 friends with a 6 months old kid and an other friend. When we arrived the place was still empty, so I asked for a table outside and was answered by one of the waiters that "it's ... read more
