It’s been years since I saw Dr. Thum, but I often tell people about my experience with her as an example of how to humiliate a patient. As she placed a medically necessary IUD, she began to talk to me about my weight. DURING the procedure. That’s a vulnerable moment for anyone, and my procedure was not weight related. She talked about “her overweight” patients as if we were a classification instead of people. I regretted that I didn’t speak up, that I didn’t report the incident.

I saw her for a issue I was having and beyond the fact she was over forty minutes late to the appointment, which I understand can happen, I was trying to be as kind as I can be in my efforts to locate help. I found her curt, disengaged and seemingly uncaring. She went on about my weight, as if this was the cure all, to loose a few pounds. I left embarrassed, confused and still in pain. It took me six months to work up the courage to put myself out there for a doctor and seek help from someone else. I'd say avoid this person ... read more
