I dropped my running car off to have the head gasket looked at since there was white smoke coming out of the exhaust. I explained to them that with the age of the car that if it was going to be a major expense to just let me know and do nothing. Three weeks and $2300 later I got my car back and it still wouldn't idle at all. Keep in mind that even with a bad head gasket that the car would still idle fine.
