My wife has a whole life policy with Lafayette Life. We chose whole life due to the favorable tax laws regarding not only the death benefit, but also when borrowing from the cash value of the policy. Seeking to build that cash value, we sent the company an extra $3,000.00 to add to our policy. Unbeknownst to us, that extra infusion of cash turned her whole life policy into a M.E.C. - a Modified Endowment Contract, which dramatically reduces the tax advantages of borrowing from her cash value.
