This hotel was built on a bluff above the Pacific Ocean in 1927 as a retreat for artists and movie stars. The films All Quiet on the Western Front and Evangeline were filmed here. Howard Hughes, Paul Getty, Humphrey Bogart, and Douglas Fairbanks all stayed here at one time or another. For many, it became a quiet escape from the glare of Hollywood.
