Stay away – Peter Gwon was my stylist, and while he was supposedly cutting my hair, he was also dieing 2 other clients' hair. Because of this, he made me wait 30 minutes after getting my hair washed. He didn't listen at all - gave me numerous layers when I asked for a blunt bob.

DO NOT GO THERE! YOU WILL REGRET IT! – I had been going to this salon for years - since 2002, but after my last experience, I will never ever go again! I normally do not write reviews, but given how terrible my last experience had been, I felt compelled to warn others out there. I got a magic straightening done in early June by Jiyeon Kim, and she totally fried my hair. See below the turn of events: - Early June 2010: Got magic hair straightening with Jiyeon Kim. She totally fried the whole front part of my hair. I told her that I wasn't happy with it at all, and she said she can fix it. I wanted my money or at least part of it back since it looked unfixable, but she said she can so I made an appointment to come back (mind you, I'm very busy and this one took about 3.5 hrs) - Mid June 2010: Went back to see Jiyeon and worked on my hair to "fix" it. She didn't at all and made it worse. She said to come back again. I was livid and said that I want my money back. However, Jiyeon begged for me to let her try again so I made another appointment. She said that she can use another type of treatment since the treatment she used before was a cheaper version of what she SHOULD have used. (Listen everyone, they compromise on the quality of their chemical treatments and fry your hair!) - Early July: Jiyeon uses another type of treatment. I thought she was able to fix it but after my hair dried, the front of my hair was even more fried. Needless to say, I was extremely angry and asked for my money back. They said that they had seen me 3 times already and couldn't give me my money back. I had already wasted ~12hrs of my life there! They didn't do anything to repair the situation! They didn't even offer to give me a part of my money back. DON'T GO to KIM SUN YOUNG! They take your money, time, and fry your hair. It will take AT LEAST 3 years to grow out this mess by Jiyeon and the untalented stylists of this place. Just wanted to warn everyone. Please don't make the same mistake I did!

Enjoyed The Cut – My friend got her hair cut here recently and it looked great so I gave it a shot. I made an online rsvp but when I showed up, it wasn't in the system. No worries--the girl at reception was very nice (spoke English) and I was take cared of right away anyway. Probably because I went during the weekday at 1130, when not many people were there. The stylist that my friend had, Peter, was great. He sat me down, asked me what I was looking for, and gave me a few suggestions. I went with one of them (keeping my hair long but get fresh layers). He did the cut, styled it so nice, and I was very satisfied with the outcome. Met up with another friend after who liked my hair so much she asked for the card. Paid flat fee of $50 cash (they charge tax if you use a credit card). Would recommend that if you, ask for Peter!

not worth the money – I've been to this salon 4 times -- each time with a different stylist and a different experience. On my first 2 visits, I was made to wait between 1 to 2 hours before I got to see a stylist. This was when I made appointments asking the receptionist to recommend a stylist and not asking for the name or writing it down. On one of these two occasions, the receptionist didn't even write me in as they couldn't find me when I showed up for the appointment so I waited until closing time before someone got to me! There was less of a wait on the last 2 visits when I got a receptionist who spoke better English and I was able to confirm with her the names of the stylists and felt assured that my appointment was properly taken. During none of these times was I ever warmly welcomed at the door, nor treated with outstanding service. At best, I got mildly friendly service. So why do I keep going back? Because they cut my Asian hair well. I have fine straight hair that has a tendency to go wavy at a certain lengths. They were able to take one look at my hair and know this and gave me a cut that would work with it. I've always experienced bad hair days when I go to non-asian or chinese salons, where they assume my hair is stick straight, but I rarely get bad hair days after going to KSY. Communication is a little bit of a problem because not all of the stylists speak english and I don't speak Korean. But if you have a picture to show, it would certainly help. If I didn't have hard-to-cut asian hair, I wouldn't go to them. My cuts are usually shoulder length to a few inches past and usually costs $40-$60 depending on who you get to cut --not the cheapest for the kind of luke warm service they provide.

most knowledgeable hair stylists, understand ur hair needs – I usually dont visit salons and the well known impoliteness and cold treatment by the stylists and staff being one of them.. KSY is none of that and all the professionalism, adjusting schedules and only about ur hair and ur needs. I live in Delaware and still travel to the city to get my japanese relaxing done by them. There are many good salons in delaware region too but they dont specialize in japanese relaxing and KSY is the best in that. Soomi Gim is one of their most knowledgeable and experienced styllist. She not only knows all the products and the differences between them but also what's best suited for your hair. I acutally got my hair done in between my trip to stamford and back and she was very very adjusting with my schedules and took great care of my hair. She does a good job of leaving well formed instructions for her assistants when she takes breaks. Overall Kim Sum Young has been in the business for a very long time and knows how to run it. they are not about showing off but strictly about taking great care of your hair. I got my hair burnt by one of the salons in Delaware and within a week i went to KSY and Soomi Gim did a perfect job of even fixing burnt hair and then got great results out of the japanese treatment also that she did on my hair. You can really trust them with your hair.

terrible cut, terrible service – you know, i'm thinking that all the positive reviews of this salon are plants because i received the worst cut and worst service ever imaginable. i was ignored, pushed around. my hair looked 10 times worse after my perm. i seriously look like buckwheat from little rascals. i complained to manager/owner (old ajima) who basically told me to get lost.

Suprisingly good~ – I was abit skeptical about going to this salon at first 'till my friends kept recommanding me to go. I'm writing this review right after my 5th visit to the salon .... and so here's my un-baised opinion PRO: Very affordable for the quality of cuts.(I could've easily paid $90~120 for that same haircut elsewhere) No pressure for buying products!!(Personally I really dislike getting pressured to buy products after a cut or a perm) CON: You might not get enough attention as you might want, especially on the weekends. So.. that sums up about 4/5 star points for me :) PS. Appointment on the weekends are a must! Due to high volume of customers they get on the weekends I had to wait about 20 min or so even with an appointment.

Waste of my $ – I made an appointment with the stylist Soomi Gim @ 10 am for a digital perm. I have such a fear of having damaged hair that, I only do this service once a year. So for me this is a big deal. I can't deal with mistakes. She showed up more than 30 minutes late. Even to this day, I think..why didn't I just leave, seeing it as a bad sign. She hurriedly did my hair. She was doing another client's hair at the same time. What is up with hair salons these days? WHY CAN'T I GET AN INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION FROM THE STYLIST? I didn't go to salons and pay $$$ for her assistants to fumble with my hair. Usually it takes 5-6 hours. It was done in 3. When it was done and my hair wet, she just left me there with a hair dryer. She just disappeared. I even heard another co worker saying, "where is she?" as he was looking at me neglected. Then she came over in hurried breath and barely attempted to style or anything. Remember, I have done digital perms before, and my hair usually comes out with gorgeous waves. In this case, it has slight waves. I feel like my hair went through trauma for nothing! It costed me $200 and I wish I didn't give her tips, but I did. Oh, another major complaint! When she asked me if I needed a haircut before the perm, I told her I am growing out my bangs, so can she just little bit taper them and a little trim. OMIGOD. She added so much more layers and my bangs got considerately shorter. This was the one of the worst hair cut I ever ever HAD!!!! I wanted to cry thinking how I wasted my money and my bangs are back to 3 months ago..like I have to start all over again. SOB. I totally don't recommend. Please don't go!
