This lawyer should be avoided at all costs, especially if he wants to offer you private mortgages to invest in. Several of these private mortgages are in default due to either negligence at the due diligence level whether acting as a mortgage broker or a lawyer. There are instances of Condo private mortgages where there were not any condos, and loans to people who are criminals and have filed multiple bankruptcies. Several of his "clients" have lost significant amounts of money.
