This neighborhood sushi spot has been around since 1978 and through those years, it has seen many spots come and go, especially with the constant onslaught of NYU land-grabs. Nonetheless, it remains in the Village for a reason. The menu has all the usual rolls, sashimi and other teriyaki options; two other reasons for its longevity include moderate prices and convenience to Union Square.

an ny staple – been eating here ever since i was a young college student fresh to nyc! although my budget has grown since then i still call japonica my fave sushi in the city. it's always good and the staff is amazing. the owners know me by now and i've gotten so many friends and family members hooked on it i should have some stocks or something!
really frsh sushi – always order from here and am never disappointed. delicious and so fast when you order in!
legit japanese food – this is one of my go-to places when i am very hungry and want something that i know will fill me up and satisfy my taste buds. always good and their service never fails. the owner has been here foreverrrr and it is definitely one of those NY staples for people who have lived her for a while.
Not just for NYU students – For years this has been an NYU staple, but really the entire city should be taking advantage of their food. Delicious and affordable (remember: they cater to broke college students), you won't find better in the area for cheaper.
LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! – Me and my Mom always go to Japonica for great food and awesome service. We love the sushi. It's the best Japanese restaurant we've been to. Always fresh and delicious.
One of my favorite places in NY – I am saddended to see so many unhappy reviews for this place. I love it very much and have for decades. I love the Ikura, and the Shigiyaki. I like all theirs rolls, sashimi pieces, and sushi. - and the yellowtail is always very delicious. I have had some very memorable toro over the years there too. I love the guys, when you get one of the old faces especially. I like the owners, the mom and the son, - although I haven't been there as frequently as I used to, and haven't seen the mother in ... read more
Violently Sick – Never again will I go back to Japonica... order two spicy tuna rolls and was sick in disgust. $10.50 per roll and I am not talking anything special... they charge extra if you want the roll with the rice on the outside. Are they kidding themselver. Never again. So many better options in NYC.
Great time – Took some client s there for lunch who were from out of town, great impression I made. The sushi pieces are huge, and oh so fresh. I made the mistake of eating sushi in NJ last week, and after I had lunch at Japonica, you can taste the freshness.
good luck! – after reading number of reviews, my experience wasn't any better. staff was rude, food wasn't ill prepare, rush.
Japonica has a 4.1 star rating with 411 reviews.
Japonica is closed now. It will open tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.
