My little girl has been attending IT 2-3 days a week since she was 13 months old. It has made all the difference in her physical abilities and in her confidence. The fact that it's a group session makes her feel she is in school like her siblings! It's fun for her and she works very hard. The summer camp is an amazing opportunity for her to explode in her capabilities!
I had reservations when I first heard about constraint therapy and wasn't sure how my daughter would react. We decided to try and started last year when Cameron was three. I was blown away by the use of her righty hand almost immediately. One day I turned around and she was eating cheerios with her right hand. Before Camp Helping Hands, my son Gabe felt misunderstood and he thought he was one of very few who were affected by hemiparesis due to stroke. "I can't believe is so many of us mom" he said after his first day of camp. His participation in this camp was not only the most intensive and beneficial occupational therapy but it also helped him realize that he is not alone. He was surrounded by people who totally understood! Scott Mathews, his camp crew and families we met...a true blessing!!!
Week 3 of Camp Helping Hands, and my in-laws asked if I see a difference in Sofia's hand. Being away from home for 6 hours a day, casting her good hand so she can strengthen her helping hand seems like a lot to them. As I watched Sofia peel a banana with righty for the very first time, I held back my tears and knew it was worth every minute of it!
