India Clay Oven

4.5

About this business

This small, simple, but inviting Indian restaurant features unusual and exotic dishes such as Prawn-Do-Pyaza and Hyderabadi Chicken Curry, with spices, apricot, and potato straws. The vegetarian menu will be more familiar to Westerners, but equally tasty. Service is friendly (if not always completely expert). Parking can be a challenge. Snag a temporary, illegal spot in front and check with the maitre d' on parking tips first.

Uninspiring – Nice room I guess; we got food to go. Were treated with a certain amount of surliness both on the phone and while paying for what we found to be mediocre Indian. Ordered three entrees; didn't come with rice or naan, so we paid extra for that and got barely enough for one person. Gave us chicken when we ordered lamb. Too many good Indian places in the city to bother with this ripoff joint.

service was awful!!!! – The service is the worst. The food is good but shouldn't one feel welcome and appreciated for being a cutomer. The head waiter acted like he would have liked to be anywhere else but serving us. He was very rude when I asked him for info about the buffet. I read other reviews to see if it was just us, but this place seems to have a reputation for bad service and keeping the waiters' tips. That is the last draw for us.

Editorial Review – Clay tandoori oven-cooked seafood, meat, vegetables and naan bread; also delivery and an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet.

Bad Food, High Prices – We ordered Samosas and some Fried Cheese for appetizers. We ordered Curry Chicken and Coconut Curry Shrimp. The waiter said,Rice for two?we saidYes.They brought out the Samosas. They were cold and flavorless. Next they brought out the Fried Cheese squares, which reminded us of McNuggets.Thank goodness we ordered some Mango Chutney! Next came or entrees and two bowls of rice along with some Garlic Nan. David looked at me and said,Ive had better.I said,Does yours have any flavor?Mine was bland and the rice... read more

Best Indian Food in SF – This is the most authentic Indian food that I have dound in the city. The flavors in all the dishes are amazing. Try the Tikka Masala and the okra, these dishes are incredible. If you ask for spicy, they will give you spicy. The delivery takes about 45 min but worth the wait.

About as Spicy as Boiled Potatoes – This is probably the worst Indian food my partner and I have ever eaten. We asked for our food to be extra hot (spicy) and it was served luke warm with almost no flavor, so the food was not "hot" in either sense of the term. I may have to take a leave of absence from consuming Saag Paneer (my favorite dish) for a long while...it was that bad. The best thing I can say is that the green chutney was spicy and the flavorless Punjabi Chicken was tender. Save your money and go for Nan 'n' Chuntn... read more

Friends from India were impressed! – Ok, so they live in North Carolina. But, they were impressed at the food (which was ordered '911' spicy- didn't know about 'double 911', which our guests would have handled, easy..) --- straight from the start, with the samosas! We were with one person who was a vegetarian and she was most pleased at the menu selection. We had chickpeas, lentils, vegetarian rice (biryani?), and another chicken dish--- and had TONS of food left over. Just don't over order, no matter how hungry you are! Enj... read more

Of The Many Indian Restaurants in SF... – not bad, but definitely not great. good overall value, with truly good saag paneer. nice portions of rice. however, both times i went, the samosas were overcooked. the naan is definitely only fair and their prawn dishes are fair at best. their delivery people are also very laconic, for what that's worth.

The best Naan in town – These guys make the best naan I have found in town. They also have a very fresh and well stocked buffet every day. I eat at this place at least once a week and I keep going back
