Editorial fromMeaning the "courtyard of the king," Il Cortile del Re is aptly named for its location. From the outside the restaurant appears to be a tiny hole-in-the-wall. But step through the front door and you'll find an Italian stone courtyard…

Italian restaurant exceeds all expectations – Recently, I had the pleasure of gathering five friends, for a birthday party, at Il cortile. At first glance the font looks so small, like a nook. But, that's dceptive. It brings you a warmth, a coziness, like you just walked into a family restaurant in Italy. The ambience, and friendliness of the staff only expands on this feeling. We sampled a pino grigio/ chardoney mix at the bar, before dinner. It was delightful. The weather was mild, so we decided to be seated outside. Again... read more
Simply the best – Il Cortile was recommended to me two years ago after I complained about the lack of truly authentic Italian restaurants in the Charleston area. Since that time I have become a regular at Il Cortile and cannot speak highly enough of my numerous experiences. The ambiance is the most inviting and romantic of any I have experienced. The food i... read more
Go ahead, bring your toddler! – Taking a two-year old to a late dinner is probably risky, but the waitstaff were very thoughtful and courteous to us. Moving from Boston, we greatly missed the authentic Italian food from the North End. This is probably the closest we'll come to that in South Carolina. The wine was amazing, and though we only had appetizers and dessert late at night, we were very satisfied. We'll definitely be back for dinner again.
Don't believe the positive reviews for this restaurant! – We were visiting for spring break with our children and really were wowed by the positive reviews we read for the restaurant. After a great evening of enjoying the wonderful sights of downtown Charleston, we were looking forward to continuing the terrific evening with a great dinner. Boy, what a letdown! We should have paid more attention to a prior review from 10/08 ... ditto on a lot of the problems they encountered: * The bowtie and manicotti were very average!! * ... read more
thoughtful staff, like dining with family – easy to make reservations, be sure to specify where you want to be seated (near street, near fireplace, in the garden in back). greeted and seated promptly, offered to handle our coats. quaint decor, professional wait staff. my husband was wearing his Army dress blues (per my request) and the owner brought a champagne toast complementary as a token of thanks for his service to our country. (very thoughtful). the food was tasty, good portion size, and freshly prepared. this is genui... read more
