Disappointment Personified – I travelled from California in 2005 specifically to see Dr Mathew after being referred to him by a neurologist in Melbourne, Australia. After going through MANY doctors in the preceeding five or so years, both in Australia and in California, I was looking forward to seeing someone who came with such high recommendations. I was shocked in my appointment to learn that Dr Mathew wanted to admit me to hospital for a week - I had only taken two days off work in CA to travel to Houston for the consulta... read more

Disgusted – I am giving one star because it is required. I saw Dr. Mathew many months ago after moving to Houston and adjusting to the constantly changing climate was causing migraines. Not only was he flippant, arrogant and refused to listen to what I was saying, he prescribed me the most expensive medications on the market (when generics are available). He also asked me to come in for 4 treatments of botox migraine treatment at 1200/per treatment. This was prior to FDA approval. I recently saw on propublica that Dr. Mathew... read more

Not happy with the experience – I went to see Dr. Mathew and I should have known right away with the way he looked at me, snide remarks he just looked annoyed period. The consult lasted a little over 45 minutes and he wanted me to do the "hospital detox," which I did at everybody's insistance and my own hesitation. I was there for 6 days and the only thing I got out of it was good lessons with biofeedback even though I was told this would be done every day and only got two days after I paid for it out of my own pocket. The d... read more

Where is the compassion? – My husband has suffered for several years with chronic tension headaches, ended up having spinal surgery with no luck or relief. After many doctors and "headache clinics" we wound up here. The doctor admitted my husband into the hospital for 5 days to detox off of all pain medicine and muscle relaxers as he was experiencing rebound headaches. Thats a huge plus. His other doctors did not recognize that his headaches had transformed due to the many medications over the years. He was able to break the... read more

Flaky service all around. – My initial exam with Dr. Mathew was great. There was extensive paperwork, including a mental health screening, which I thought was interesting, given the link between depression and migraine. He walked me through every possible headache symptom and made a lot notes. However, while the website for the clinic said an initial exam took about three hours, mine lasted less than thirty minutes. I was prescribed both an abortive medication and a preventative medication, in case my migraines continued to ... read more

Evasive and Unforthcoming – We really really wanted to trust these people, but they made it impossible. When you ask about their success rate, they say "89%". When you ask what that MEANS---i.e. does it mean headaches under control for six months, for a year, forever?---they tell you that "you have to trust the doctor". When you ask how many of those 89% eventually have to be readmitted to the hospital, they say "hopefully, none of them". When you say, "Well, yes, hopefully none, but what percentage ARE readmitted", they say... read more

Houston Headache Clinic – I can't speak highly enough about Dr. Ninan Mathew. This is the person you need to see if things regarding Chronic Cluster Headaches get set in and you can't stop the chronicity. I have also heard that he is as brilliant with migraines that are out of control. When your symptoms are so bad and your neurologist isn't getting anywhere, this is the Doctor to see. We live in San Antonio and the drive for us to Houston was more than well worth it. We were even scared of getting our hopes too high. Unfort... read more
