This little hotel located just blocks from the East Village is popular with young Europeans and other adventurous types looking for a good deal in a convenient yet quiet neighborhood. It is located right off Stuyvesant Square and near beautiful Gramercy Park. The rooms are small, very basic and none have a private bath, but for the neighborhood and price you might want to give this place a try.

An old New York experience at an old New York price. – A friend and I were seeing a band at Irving Plaza and decided to make a "rock & roll night" of it and stay at a hotel nearby (our only other options being the $400/night W or Gramercy Park). I am accustomed to relatively upscale travel and am also a bit of cleanfreak/germaphobe, so my expectations were low. But we were very pleasantly surprised by the overall comfort and tidiness here--even the bedding was relatively crisp and clean. Rooms are small and devoid of many fr... read more
A kitschy, low-cost and comfy hotel. – The Scene This hotel is located on a serene and leafy block. If it looks familiar, that's because you've seen it in Woody Allen's "Manhattan Murder Mystery." Not only was part of the movie filmed here, but Madonna has also posed at the hotel for a photo shoot. Even though this isn't a luxury property, models, artists and musicians are constantly gravitating here. The Details Despite recent renovations, the kitsch still rules the roost. The WWII-era-looking wallpaper and floral bedspread... read more
Mixed Feelings – I was in a love hate relationship with this place when i stayed. I'll first state the "love" part of it: I really enjoyed the location of hotel 17 it was only about 2 blocks away from the union square subway, also, there were a lot of places to shop in that area as well as nice delis and restaurants. The place was VERY affordable (to NY standards) the room was an ok size and the shared bathrooms were always clean. Now to the "hate" part- the desk staff was not that helpful, when we asked for directions to pl... read more
Fantastic place in perfect location – This is a charming place to stay. The staff is friendly and accomodating. The rooms are clean and "good enough". Anyone who has spent time in NYC knows that small is the standard. The shared bathrooms are clean and not an inconvenience. Check your high expectations at the door - if you are expecting the marriott or holiday inn or sheraton, then go stay there. For the rest of us, we'll take Hotel17 with it's no-frills price and perfect location.
Small rooms for three, excellent shared bath – A nice and small hotel in a great location. You won't feel the "weight" of shared bath because they're constantly clean and you have 4 of them on each floor ! Just be prepared to small beds..
Cool and Cheap – I always stay here if I'm travelling alone - its safe, clean and quiet. If you can get a room overlooking the street - that's the best place to be; light, views of gorgeous apartments, tree-tops and a sense of space. The communal bathrooms are spotless and the staff straight-forward but helpful. The dark wood corridors and original features make for a great, old New York atmosphere in a handy location.
Cheap and Cheerful – My mother and brother stayed here in June and were very happy. The neighborhood is a delightful tree-lined oasis of brownstones, it's an easy walk to the east village and the subway at Union Square, it's quiet, and - best of all - it's cheap. This isn't the Ritz, but if you don't need a pool and roomservice, and just want a plain, clean room in a great location for a price you can afford, you won't find better in New York.
Never again – What a dump! I stayed here in Oct. 2000. The most important thing I learned from my experience is to NEVER stay at a place that does not accept credit cards and requires cash or traveler's checks upfront for the entire stay. Do yourself a favor and avoid this "hotel". Spend the extra money and stay at a real, reputable hotel--it will make your visit to NYC much more enjoyable. I would never recommend Hotel 17 to ANYONE.
