RecommendedI had the pleasure of attending a retreat at Highlander with the National Center for Learning and Literacy. It was an experience I will never forget. It gave me a stronger grounding in the necessing of literacy for all and social justice as an imperative. I am forever grateful for the lessons learned.

It is a unique place and has always been clear about its values and mission. It changed my life, when I visited in 1983. I met John Gaventa then, who introduced me to participatory research - something I had not heard about in my Cornell Univ. research courses back then. I never looked back.
Rare archival collection, great tradition of activism and organization. Extremely resilient. "You can't lock up an idea" or burn it down.
I can't believe the news about the fire. I learned so much the many times I was there, sitting in one of those rocking chairs, discussing how to be of service and getting students involved in service. I'm heartbroken. Were the archives also destroyed?
Legendary historic sacred place.
Out of the ashes will rise a better Highlander Center. This won't stop the work...it will continue.
