I had a few spots on my carpet that I wanted removed. When I called to make an appointment I asked if they steam cleaned and was told no, but they had a system that worked as well as steam cleaning. The system they used was a young boy (maybe 10) dousing the stain with a chemical and taking a brush and scrubbing as hard as he could while the adult looked on.
