The building that houses Schubas is a brick and masonry neo-Gothic treasure that's been a Lakeview neighborhood landmark for over 100 years. Built in 1903 as part of a project undertaken by the Schlitz Brewery, the building was one of hundreds erected at the turn of the century. Often known as "Tied Houses", Schubas remains one of a handful of these elegant buildings still operating as a saloon. Schubas Tavern happens to also have the reputation as one of the best small music venues in the country. By pulling together all of... read more

Must have been a good-service fluke – I was really surprised to see the low-star ratings citing horrible service for Harmony Grill. Granted, I have only been there once, but neither my boyfriend nor I had any complaints. And being that we are heavily tattooed and/or pierced, we are used to getting mediocre service in some of the pricier joints in Chicago (too bad, too, bc we tip awesome).... Anyways, I had the sweet potato ravioli with pecans and he had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes. Very different tastes accomplished on... read more
Best Brunch in Chicago – Since brunch is my favorite meal, period, standards were high. And first came the beignets with raspberry sauce; perfect way to spark the appetite! At the behest of my friends, I ordered a Bloody Mary which was just the right blend of spice and tomato, and again a spot on segue to my Mario Omelet! Chorizo crumbled into a fold of egg and avocado, not runny, not dry - JUST RIGHT. I felt like Goldilocks and I have been eating porridge in all the wrong bowls. Since my omelet was paired so perfectly with ... read more
Horrible Service – My girlfriend and I decided to drop by for a quick bit before a concert at Schuba's tavern. After standing at the door for a few minutes we decided to seat ourselves at the nearest table in the nearly empty restaurant, after another 5 minutes we literally got up and grabbed a waiter. The apologetic waiter took our drink order but before he returned the manager came over. We assumed he was going to apologize but instead proceeded to reprimand us, saying that if we ever entered by cutting through the kitchen... read more
The Worst Service...Ever! – The Harmony Grill seems to have a lot to offer on the menu. Honestly, I shall never know. After waiting twenty-five minutes, or longer, my girlfriend and I were never served. We received water, menus, and some coffee, but no one ever came around to see what else we would like. In fact, the only people to acknowledge us as customers were the greeter and a busboy. When a couple of ladies were seated in a different section and waited on within minutes by a server that I had watched standing around wi... read more
The restaurant side of Schuba's Tavern serves better-than-bar-food fare to concertgoers. – In Short Bright colors welcome customers to this casual joint, where painted wall portraits range from Elvis and Johnny Cash to Sammy Sosa. In the summer, a pleasant sidewalk patio beckons. The extensive menu includes burgers, barbecue, lip-stinging chicken wings and a range of appetizers, soups, salads, pizza and desserts. Weekend brunch features items like the crab Benny--eggs Benedict with crab cakes subbing for the Canadian bacon.
Terrible service! – The mediocre food is not good enough to overcome the horrendous service. The service never fails to disappoint, and I'm not giving it another chance. The inattentive staff is so bad as to make you feel unwelcome--they have problems from greeting, to seating to serving. Don't waste your time or money here.
undercooked turkey burger deemed OK by waiter – an obviously pink to the look - and raw to the mouth - turkey burger was served to my date. he said it tasted undercooked, so he cut it in half and it was very pink. the waiter was asked to take it back to have it cooked more. the waiter instead stood there and said, "i have worked here for years, all our turkey burgers look like this - it's the spices...." then he just stood there with the plate looking at us. after my date caved in, i took a bite to check and the burger was R... read more
