To avoid being eaten by a bear always hike with someone slower and fatter than you.
Avoid eating at the cafeteria, the food is adequate, but overpriced for what you get. You'd likely do much better at the general store.
Go early at sunrise and when entering via south point, no $25 fee to pay since gates are open.
Bring your own water bottles. There are numerous places to fill up with natural spring water for free.
