Have you ever wondered why golf balls are covered with small divots instead of remaining perfectly smooth? It was discovered in the 1930’s that adding divots to the balls would actually help golfers get more distance out of their strokes.
In March of 1744, the Company of Gentleman Golfers complied the rules of golf. The group renamed itself The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, and played at Leith in Scotland.
Early golf balls were actually fairly smooth in appearance. Golfers noticed that as golf balls became older and more beat up that they actually traveled farther, and soon older scarred balls became preferred. Soon new golf balls began to be intentionally pitted or dimpled.
