I started attending BJJ classes at Four Elements about 2 years ago. I continued attending as worsening outside medical conditions began to impact my ability to engage because Shawn had made clear from the beginning that she would offer adjustments and variations to anyone needing them without judgement. This has been a part of the class since I began, so I didn't feel like I was getting singled out when I began to need these accommodations. After a successful surgery and more convalescence than I care to remember, Shawn was ... read more
One of the most inclusive places I have ever trained with an absolute POWERHOUSE of talent in all of the teachers.
I love this gym, it is very inclusive of all folks. The workouts are intense and it is run by excellent people.
Shawn is not only well known and respected in the world of BJJ as an athlete, but she is also a thoughtful teacher. I had the opportunity to visit her school and work with her and her students and she has done a tremendous job creating an inclusive and fun place to train. Definitely check her out if you're looking for a safe, dynamic and legitimate place to workout!
There are queer gyms in the Bay Area that see our LGBTQ+ community as little more than profit. This is a fitness center (QTPOC co-owned and led) that actually cares about our community. They offer free wellness classes alongside their class offerings - so that they keep wellness accessible to the community. Their Friday night LGBTQ class is not only a wonderful workout - it is a great way to further create community! Shawn works with you to help you realize realistic, healthy and safe fitness goals. This is an Oakland, CA-ba... read more
A friend recommended Shawn's Friday night LGBT class and I had to check it out when I was in town because I was amazed by the pure existence of it. I was impressed of how mindful Shawn was of everyone's pronouns, medical needs, and experience level. I really enjoyed the drills we did and how Shawn continued to build on everything (seems like a given but I've trained at a number of places where it feels like all the drills are completely unrelated). The community here seems really strong and I'd definitely come back next time... read more
[about Shawn's Friday LGBTQ brazilian jiu jitsu class specifically, although the other instructors & classes I've dipped into are also swell] I'm a trans woman and this class is saving my life. I always got pushed out of martial arts as a kid (kung fu, fencing, even tai chi) because, while I was a good student & the instructors loved me, traditional pedantic/disclipline-based teaching styles is bad news for people with dysphoria and I certainly wasn't game for the toxic-mascu...Continue Reading
