Opened by a team that believes dinner and a movie are a natural combination, this courtyard restaurant and bar keeps an internationally intellectual atmosphere by projecting the films of Fellini, Godard and company on its neighbor’s walls. Tableside speakers add a drive-in feel to the French bistro fare, letting the films function as either the background or a main attraction. Reservations are recommended as Foreign Cinema is one of the leading contestants in the Mission hipness race.

Horrible Overpriced Food – Expecting a nice dinner for Valentine's day, I show up and find out that the dinner is $80 per person for a 4 course meal! Although that is pretty steep, I decided to go ahead figuring that the food would be good. However, it was the worst food I've tased in a long time. The mushroom "capaccino" a small mushroom soup was apparently one full course and the steak was so salty that I was only able to take several bites. The movie is only visible from outside so the novelty effect totally does not appl... read more
if you're in the neighborhood... – stylish decor, creative balcony and view of mission street, intimate if you go early in the week, crowded later in the week, well stocked top shelf, bathrooms not sticky, can feel very downtempo or very rock & roll depending on dj and bartender, can smoke while you drink outside but not inside, can be helpful to ask about music since it can change from month to month
A WONDERFUL TIME – THE FOOD WAS GREAT THE SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT, THE BEST EVER! I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOREIGN CINEMA! WHEN YOU MAKE YOUR RESERVATION I RECOMMEND YOU TELL THEM YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE SEATED WITH THE FOOD SERVER NAMED " CHRIS " HE IS THE BEST SERVER THERE AND GIVES THE BEST SERVICE.... I HAVE HAD DINNER HERE MANY TIMES, HE IS THE ONE YOU SHOULD REQUEST!
A lovely evening – I enjoyed Foreign Cinema. Our server was attentive and friendly, the food was tasty, portions were just the right size, and with our reservation, we were seated upon arriving. I would go back again sometime!
Great time – We went Sat. night at 6:30 without a reservation and were able to get a good table. Good wine, great food, excellent service (who was very helpful as my girlfriend is allergic to wheat gluten), good dessert & dessert wines & a unique menu. Have a VERY different experience than some of the negative reviews posted. I would highly recommend.
i wish the food was nice as the place – face it, foreign cinema looks great. the movies, the decor, the fireplace. obviously the place has deep pockets, so why can't they hire a decent chef? the food is overpriced for what you get, and bland!!! I recommend just drinks here; go someplace else for dinner.
CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS AWARD!!! – Held a great friend's birthday party (party of 12 and tab of $800) on a Saturday nite. The most shocking thing about the whole experience was that our waiter (first name starts with a T) and his boss treated us like we were from the tenderloin and our dinner was charity. In other words, they couldn't care less. Our waiter was rude and not attentive and his boss presented herself as someone who cared even less. Towards the end of the nite our waiter told us he wasn't getting any more drinks f... read more
Too much hype, not enough food! – We were very disappointed in this restaurant. Not only were the drinks small, but the food was overly complicated and frankly there wasn't much of it! For the prices they are charging, we expected much more. The food was overly seasoned (i.e. too salty) at times and where they tried to deviate from traditional fair, they failed (i.e. Ceasar Salad). We definitely will not be going back!
Don't insult my taste buds... – What an overrated, waste of a restaurant! The first time I tried it, I swore never to come back. But I did, and it was just as bad or worse. Id be shocked if our server still has a job after our dining experience. But he was just a fraction of the problem. The menu is littered with foodie-chef jargon merely in place to intimidate the diner, which in these difficult times seems arrogant and elitist. It was impossible from the moment we sat down to expect what was next. Sizes and descriptions of... read more
