Opened by a team that believes dinner and a movie are a natural combination, this courtyard restaurant and bar keeps an internationally intellectual atmosphere by projecting the films of Fellini, Godard and company on its neighbor’s walls. Tableside speakers add a drive-in feel to the French bistro fare, letting the films function as either the background or a main attraction. Reservations are recommended as Foreign Cinema is one of the leading contestants in the Mission hipness race.

This Mission Dweller's Favorite – For weekend brunch, there's no place like Foreign Cinema when the weather is nice. The Fritatta is the best bet, and the "Fruits de Mer" (a tiered platter of assorted raw and cooked shellfish and crab) is a pretty impressive sight and a good deal for a couple of people to share. FC's also a great option for large groups- seating is plentiful and there are several private dining areas that can be rented out, including the gallery space off the patio. Definitely go for the ambience- the food i... read more
very nice and unique experience – I recently had a romantic dinner here and highly recommend it. We sat outside and our waiter was very helpful and sweet...all his recommendations were great. Our wine was great, the duck was amazing and I had the sea bass, which was good, as well. It is a very cute and romantic place. The only downfall was that we waited about 15min. for our table, even with reservations...but it was worth it...I forgive them, it was Friday night! :)
Lackluster atmosphere/Small portions – I had high hoped for my night out at Foreign Cinema and was highly disappointed. We sat upstairs, tucked up again a huge wood post. From that vantage point we could have been in any restaurant. Portions were good, but small and worthly of a $10-15 price range instead of a $25-30 range. Service was efficient but entirely devoid of any personality or thought. I left wondering what the hype was about and I most certainly won't be back and don't recommend you waste an evening there.
Needs larger menu; some portions small – Foreign Cinema gets an "A" for atmosphere and service, however, their menu could have been a bit more expansive. I was a bit disappointed with the entree selections and the portions of the appetizers, but otherwise it was tasteful.
a fun fun experience – It was an unknow old french movie they were showing, and we enjoy the experience and the food. It is in south Market, but it is in a comfortable area. We'll bring our friend to there for the experience.
Unfulfilling and Unsatisfied – If you're planning on watching the movie while eating dinner, be prepared for poor sound. In addition, plan on waiting awhile before recieving your food. As for eating outdoors, the picnic tables are not comfortable at all, especially when the drinks and plates are tilted on the uneven tables while you eat. Meal portions are small and unfulfilling.
Second CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS AWARD!!! – First of all, they never got our orders right and kept bringing out wrong dishes/drinks, even after we sent back the wrong drinks. It took 30 mins for them to shuck a dozen of oysters and serve beer, another 30 mins for appetizers, then 1 hour for entrees. "Steak - rare" came out "medium" and the waitress WOULD NOT take it back but just say, "too bad". And it took extra 30 mins to get our bill paid. The waitress even didn't give us a pen with the bill - does she really want us to pay!... read more
over and over and over – love it more everytime i go back. kind of an nyc feel w/o the high prices. especially the $2 draft happy hour that goes until 9 pm. fridays and saturdays get a little too packed for my pleasure but sundays and early week nights are perfect for dates and hanging with my girls. you can take your drinks into foreign cinema next door and catch part of the flick if you want and you can order oysters and appetizers from the restaurant too. a little something to soak up the mojitos is always nice. i don't e... read more
Most Romantic Valentine's Ever – My wife and I dined at Foreign Cinema recently for Valentine's Day, and were blown away by the ambiance, service and flavor of the food. I had read that foodies like Alice Waters and Marianne Cunningham dine here often, and now I understand why.
