best french onion soup I've been to Elephant and Castle a bunch of times both for dinner and just for drinks. Their menu is pretty good - they have a lot of tasty salads in addition to more traditional english entrees. Their french onion soup is amazing - I don't know what they season it with, but it's definitely the best I've ever had. Their beers are limited, but the bar area is so big that it's a good place to go if you have a group.
Close to the Beaten Path I went here to watch some of the middle of the day World Cup games and loved that there was hardly a soul in there. Granted, it was 2:30pm on a Saturday, in a rarely traveled block of downtown. The block is 2 blocks from the Old South Meeting house, so it's actually quite accessible. The food was your average bar food and the beer was your average bar beer, but the fact that it was off the beaten path made the experience worthwhile.
English - Style Pub From the decor this looks like an Americanized English Pub. The menu is far more ecclectic ranging from fish and chips to pasta primavera. We had a pleasant evening out there, and would consider it again.
