El Bravo

About this business

This Mexican restaurant lovingly prepares the food. Decoration isn't this restaurant's strong suit unless you have a thing for neon beer signs and pinatas. But do not let the plain surroundings keep you from enjoying an above-average meal. Machaca, the reconstituted dried beef, is one of its most popular foodstuffs and is used in a variety of dishes. Navajo tacos (also known as fry bread) and stacked enchiladas are unusual and worth trying. Freshly made tortillas are available by the dozen.

Average gringo Mexican food. – I live five minutes from El Bravo and have eaten there three times since Christmas. It is very over-rated. I ordered a tamale. and it was what I would call pre-fab. It was not made with corn husks, and the corn meal was cake like. Also the food appears to be microwaved. I ordered a burrito and it was cold. I had to send it back. The enchilada was very mediocre-- cheese was gluey and sauce tasted as if it was from a can. . For the same money and in the same neigborhood, you can get much better f... read more

World's Best Tamales – This is a great little family run restaurant serving delicious Mexican dishes all made from scratch. The real standout here are the tamales. Get the green corn chicken tamales with green sauce. The homemade tortillas rival Carolina's. Other good items are the enchiladas, carne asada and green chili burros. The word has gotten out about the tamales and there is now an El Bravo at the Sky Harbor airport. The food is still good at the airport branch but the real deal is at the 7th Street location.

Authentic Mexican food with a no-fuss attitude where taste takes top priority. – In Short Look past a few pinatas and Mexican beers signs and discover why this neighborhood restaurant is a local favorite for its Sonoran-style dishes. Go for the jalapeno-studded machaca or the stacked enchiladas and Navajo tacos, a definite rarity.

OK, But Not Worth A Special Trip – I want to like El Bravo more than I actually do; to nod knowingly about the authentic, understated masterpieces emanating from this hole in the wall. But the glorious reputation, perhaps earned from an earlier era, utterly escapes me. Maybe I just havent ordered the right thing yet? My son swears by the beef burro. I dont want to defame the food. It's quite satisfactory in a simple way - but hardly memorable. Evening service is friendly but understaffed and slow. El Bravo is fine for a quick... read more

Overpriced! – We ate the smallest $5 burritos you have ever seen! One breakfast burrito @ Mcdonalds is bigger! We ordered 2 burritos and 3 hard shell tacos and it was $17! They added chips and salsa to our order without asking and charged us for it. The burritos and tacos were horrible. Best beans in town? Doubt it! It was overpriced. Don't go there! I'm Mexican and can say that the food was NOT authentic. A complete overpriced dissapointment.

Mixed Feelings – I am a regular at this place and I have to be honest, the service is usually very slow and the older woman who I think either owns or runs the restaurant is extremely unfriendly and downright rude at times, which turns a pleasant experience into an okay one. However, service aside, the food is absolutely excellent, which is what keeps me coming back for more. They make the most delicious refried beans I have ever tasted, no other place can duplicate this recipe (or should even try). Everything on the menu is... read more

I love this place! – I highly recommend the #12. The food is fresh, they have great salsa and the staff is friendly and remembers you if you are a regular. Get there early for lunch - it fills up fast.
