The first thing that caught me by surprise was the escalator ride down in the north tunnel. Holy crap, I got a little dizzy riding down 188 feet below ground. Mixing in the massive concrete cylindrical facade, slope, and the floor below made parts of the ride seem like a flat moving sidewalk. I did get used to it the more we rode down. The DC Metro System is one of the nicest subway systems that I have used in the US. I use to live in DC and used it everyday for work. Now 16 years later I returned to visit DC and once again used and was very impressed with Metro. The stations are well lit, clean and very safe. The trains run frequently and are on time. The cost per ride is very low which makes taking the Metro great. There are many stop located throughout the DC area and the Metro now goes all the way out to Dulles International airport. How great is that!
