I recently parted ways with Dr. Shugarman after 4 years. The main reason is that he started pushing ECT on me, which I wanted no part of. It was also often hard to convince him that the most recent med I was on was putting my anxiety on overload. However—he is kind, competent, and professional. He aggressively attempted to treat my illness with many different approaches (including a year-long fight with my insurance company) for which I am grateful. He is worth trying. I just needed a new route.
I have been seeing Dr. Sugarman for 3 years for Bipolar condition which I've had all my life. As an older person, I've seen a number of psychiatrists over my life while living in other states. He is the best. He understands the problems of older people as they work with bipolar disorder. His suggestions, recommendations, and medication prescriptions have always been helpful. I would recommend him to anyone.
