Greg L. review for Dr. Jeff Lookhart & Associates

My wife lost 85% of her vision My 59 year old spouse lost 85% of her central vision in her right eye after cataract surgery with Dr. Silverstein with follow-up by Dr. Jeff L. Lookhart, OD. Prior to the surgery, she had never worn glasses and had no issues but she was told that she needed surgery. Many flags should have told us that this was not the best group but after the cataract surgery, my wife told the staff there was a problem with her eye. The day after her surgery at the follow-up appointment and then at the follow-up meeting six days after surgery, my wife told Dr. Lookhart, the Optometrist assigned to do follow-up examinations, that her vision was "Wonky" and that something wasn't right. She could see and pass the vision test but said that something was impeding her vision. He never did more than a quick review, never used high magnification but told her in each case that this was normal and would improve. I have since learned that this was anything but normal. They ran a test on depth perception and literally guided her hand to pass after 6 or 7 fails. On the evening one week after the surgery she noticed bands across her vision. She called on the next morning after losing more of her vision and was told to Immediately come to the office. Dr. Lookhart tested her and this time looked at her eye with high magnification and told that her optic nerve was swollen. She had lost 85% of her vision in her right eye and had suffered a "Ischemic Optic Neuropathy" and most likely the vision would not return. He referred her to a Ophthalmologist / Neurologist and scheduled my wife for an appointment five days later. I said that this timing was unacceptable and we would serve as our own advocate. He didn’t care! During this time, my wife had been given two lectures as how they were not responsible for the vision loss as she was in tears. As we left, Dr. Lookhart actually said "Good Luck" washing his hands of it! I was able to get into the same neurologist that day and she has been treated by him ever since. We were told that if she had been examined more thoroughly and treated during the critical week, the outcome could have been substantially better! As a husband who comforts his spouse in tears 10 or 12 times a week, even now, after 8 months. I can tell you I sooooo wish we had turned to another group before surgery. She has forever been scarred by blindness and has quit driving at night because of this situation. I was told by the office manager in this major moneymaking machine approximately six months later that they had never heard that my wife had lost any vision. Dr. Lookhart is not qualified to be in this position if he couldn’t find time to fully examine my wife’s eyes during the critical week. We will forever question what could have been had she been treated by someone else. We took Dr. Lookhart’s word that all of this was completely normal. Dr. Lookhart has never looked in to her outcome and I’d be surprised if he has any memory of such. We have since spoke with a lady whom kept her vision because she was treated in a timely manner. I would highly recommend going elsewhere or at least get a second opinion!
