Hippocrates was not only the father of medicine, but was also the proponent of a belief that disease was not a punishment from the gods. He proposed that disease was a byproduct of diet, living habits, and environmental factors. His theories would propel medicine to become more of a science, and helped to steer medicine to an emphasis on prognosis.

When tonsillitis occurs in babies and kids, it is very easy for dehydration to occur because they don’t want to drink if swallowing hurts their throat. Offer your child small, frequent doses of liquids, as dehydration can be especially dangerous in this age group.

Some people may have larger tonsils than normal and still be perfectly healthy. Therefore, judging the condition of the tonsils and trying to spot infection may be hard just by looking at them. If you are unsure, contact a doctor, who can run tests to diagnose the problem with your tonsils.

In some cases, a tonsillectomy may need to be modified or postponed: 1) Bleeding disorders must be adequately controlled prior to surgery. 2) Acute tonsillitis should be successfully treated prior to surgery. Treatment may postpone the surgery three to four weeks.

Bacterial infections of the tonsils, especially strep, are treated first with antibiotics, but sometimes removal of the tonsils is recommended. Two primary reasons for removal are recurring infection after antibiotics, and difficulty breathing due to enlargement of the tonsils.
