My 22 year old son was having a mental health crisis and having suicidal thoughts. A doctor and counselor both recommended Dash. I wish I understood what would happen next. As soon as my son was honest with them about his suicidal thoughts, they called the police and had him handcuffed and brought to Stony Broom CPAP. He was held against his will for 36 hours and was completely traumatized by witnessing very mentally ill patients who screamed the entire time he was there. He got no sleep. This place is not a hospital. They are basically a walk in clinic for 24 hour mental health emergencies. They were able to help me tremendously. Everyone is kind and friendly. Don't be scared away by the bad reviews. If you understand mental health situations and what to do and the help you need, then this place is great. My experience with Dash was the worst experience I have encountered. As per school recommendation, we were referred to Dash for a child's psychological evaluation. After the school day was over, we took the child to Dash as requested. We were kept there from the end of the school day (4 pm) to 10:30 pm awaiting evaluation. They concluded that the child should be psychologically evaluated in another facility, namely Stony Brook CPEP. Took everything to convince a loved one to go to them. just for them tell us they’re not a danger to themselves after hours and just send us home. The same week they tried to commit suicide. Could have been avoided if they bothered to hear our words or pay attention
This place was great!!!! My son was having a complete mental break down. He text me "mom I need help". I had no idea where to start or who to turn to. We called DASH and the women on the phone said you can come right now and that's exactly what we did. That was the best decision we could have ever made. The nurse spoke to my son gave him the hard truth about his situation. The social worker and peer counselor that was assigned to us were great.
