We drove two hours for an appointment, when our 19-month-old child was having 40 or more myoclonic jerks daily. We spent 90 minutes in an exam room, with Dr. Barber coming in and out. Every time he left, he said someone else needed his attention. He probably spent a total of 20 minutes in the room with us during that 90 minutes span of time. After we described the jerks that our son was experiencing, Dr. Barber diagnosed him with a seizure disorder and referred us to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh (UPMC). There, the neuro... read more
Years ago, after seeing Dr. Barber to confirm the diagnosis of Asperger's for our son, we got out of his office horribly depressed about the future of our son. The doctor made a long list of things he would never be able to do. Well, our son is now a grown man, and while he has some things he struggles with (like most people), he has two college degrees, has a job, is liked by people because of his kindness, drives in a city, plays two instruments, volunteers his computer skills in a socially active group, and has a wicked s... read more
He was extremely hostile when we asked him questions, despite being prompted to. On numerous occasions he failed to properly diagnose our children, going so far as to refuse to test our child for asthma until we received a letter from his preschool demanding he do so (Turns out it was Asthma). If you value your children go nowhere near this man.
Could have avoided life long pain and an awful surgery if I had any other doctor
For 1/2 hr they sat in a room without any books or distractions, merely medical equipment they were not allowed to touch. They were hot and cooped up and without an apology for keeping us waiting, he told my kids to sit and be quiet and physically placed them in their chairs. My kids were so woundup at that point they didn't listen to him and he was very irate about it. Told me to get a professional in the house to communicate with me via headset to tell me how to handle my kids when bad.
Would not take my dog that I don’t have to this man. Thought and spoke very highly of this man for years. Had my son to see him and he treated my son horribly. The way he talked to him was unbelievable took my son and left the office and never went back. Steer clear of this office and doctor.
Dr. Barber is an excellent pediatric neurologist. We were relieved to find him. Living as we do in a rural area, we thank God for his expertise! Dr. Barber is very knowledgeable re:ASD &ADHD. He also maintains a blog to help parents. During appts, he encourages parents to voice memo the time so we don’t miss anything discussed! No doctor does that! He is very direct and encouraging, but he doesn’t sugarcoat issues. It is refreshing and honest. I wish all were like him! Highest recommendation!
I cannot recommend Dr. Schoemer enough! She really takes the time to answer my many questions and explain the advice she gives. You can really tell she loves caring for children. My son and I are at ease during every appointment and she never makes me feel paranoid or stupid as a first time parent.
Dr Barber was very rude to me and my child. He was very impatient with my child and he degraded me to the point that I actually started to cry at the appointment. I had never felt so worthless from a doctor and it was totally unexpected. I was expecting to be helped and informed on issues my child was having, but instead I was left feeling helpless and confused. Why is he a pediatric doctor if he has terrible bedside manner? I will request to never see Dr Barber again!
