Congregation Rodeph Shalom, founded in 1795, is the oldest Ashkenazic synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. The current building was constructed in 1928 and is the only synagogue in this country to retain its Byzantine-Moorish architectural style. The sanctuary's stained glass windows are a rare collection of D'Ascenzo design and the foyer houses the Obermayer Collection of Jewish ritual art. Beautiful and historic, the people were very warm and inviting. A modern reform Friday night service. The clergy showed great knowledge and familiarity with many of the congregants.
This is my home away from home. I'm here all the time for worship, social action, friendship, comfort, etc.
I was bar mitzvah there over fifty years ago so I had memories there. It is a beautiful amazing synagogue. The rabbi was great, not conservative but seriously more profound by his output. I would recommend it.
