Chavas Mexican Restaurant

4.5

About this business

Historic Soulard is a great place to go for food, fun, entertainment, live music and some of the top brewskies in the nation. If bar food isn't the bees knees for the evening, Chava's Mexican Restaurant offers a fresh, reasonably priced, and fun Mexican alternative. The brightly colored building, complete with bustling patio (when the weather permits) is a welcoming sight to any passer by. Finding parking may be a challenge, but the entire neighborhood is pedestrian friendly. The staff is bubbly and warm and the entire atmos... read more

Excellent Food, Atmosphere & Service – On my recent visit to St. Louis for an 80th birthday, I was lucky enough to be taken to this great restaurant on Mother's Day for lunch. I'm from California (San Francisco area) and we pride ourselves on our Mexican restaurants. Chava's was better than all that we have. Better because the owner has seen fit to outfit it with lovely decor, excellent staff & delicious food. My sisters and I have been in the restaurant business for a combined total of 50+ years and so I think we are always... read more

misses the Mark – bad mojo here. Food is ok, albeit rather predictable.

Quite Enjoyable – Started with Jenas, a flavorful stuffed jalapeno appetizer, then chicken enchilada special with shredded spicy chicken and a great sauce accompanied by nicely seasoned rice and refried beans, finished with flash fried cheese cake that was beautifully presented and just right for two. Food was piping hot and delicious. Service was great from helping decide what to order to keeping the drinks filled. A friendly neighborhood environment with mostly young professionals but we felt comfortable and are in our ear... read more

No Big Deal – Not good. We both had the El Mireko (fried chicken burritos topped with chile con queso and guacamole, served with rice and beans). The burrito filling was dry and bland. Even the beans and rice were bland. I agree with the previous reviewer that because of the wood floors and high ceilings, this was definitely not the place to hold a conversation. I don't know about my dining companion, but I definitely won't be back.

Disappointed – Judging from some reviews, my wife and I went with high hopes. We keep looking for flavorful southwest Mexican food in StL. This is not it. The place has a cool atmosphere and that is a plus. But the wood floors on the inside make the place loud. If you like loud, then this is the place. Outside is not better. The tables are right next to each other and we felt like we had to talk to the people next to us because it was so awkward. The salsa was bland, definitely not fresh. The chicken enchiladas verde had lit... read more

Very good meal for the money, great service, wonderful fried cheesecake dessert, very clean bathrooms – Overall, a very good meal, a delicious dessert I hadn't seen at any other Mexican restaurant, reasonable prices, excellent service, pleasing lighting and atmosphere. We had fajitas for two, chicken and steak, fried cheesecake, and Budweiser Select beer. The bathrooms are roomy and very clean. Some people might want their Mexican food a little spicier.

Great Atmosphere--Lousy Mexican Food – This place had a great atmosphere and looked very promising, but the food left much to be desired. It was far from authentic, and the salsa was quite possibly the worst I've ever had--it was like they ran out of their normal salsa and threw in some marinara to compensate! The entrees were fair--my dining partner enjoyed her vegetarian dishes. I had a chicken chimichanga that was bland and I could not finish it. I had heard good things about this place, so perhaps this visit was the exce... read more
