Remember that while some coats can provide insulation and protection from the sun, a long, thick coat tends to hold heat and makes it difficult for the horse to cool down!

When your horse suffers a strain, sprain or traumatic injury, or is stall bound for extended periods, their legs may swell and become warm to the touch. Because inflammation and swelling can damage tissues and cause discomfort, we may prescribe a “sweat” bandage as an aid in reducing fluid build-up in the legs.

As the weather heats up, it's important to choose cooler turnout times. Overnight is ideal, but if that's not possible, have your horse go outside as early as possible during the day.

The horse’s most vital nutrient is water! An adult horse’s body is composed of roughly 70 percent water, which equates to 770 pounds or 96 gallons of water for the average 1,100-pound horse.

Any changes to your horse’s diet should be made gradually to avoid colic (abdominal pain usually associated with intestinal disease) or laminitis (painful inflammation in the hoof associated with separation of the hoof bone from the hoof wall). If you have any questions, please contact us!

Did you know? Horses can see almost 360 degrees. They have one blind spot that is directly behind them at the base of their tail. If they move their head slightly around, they can then see in that blind spot. This is why horses can so accurately kick something that walks behind them and why you would always make sure you horse knows it’s you back there!
