Great customer service – We went to the CHART HOUSE for a special occassion last week and THANKFUL we did. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we felt special. It was my friends birthday, which was proudly printed on the menu we received. We were advised when making the reservation that window seats were on a first come basis and the host would notify us at check-in if a window table was available or what the wait would be. Avoid it, the food is terrible and the service is poor particularly for a restaurant of this price range. – We dined at the Chart House on Thanksgiving day for a family celebration. The food arrived cold, the service was poor, we were served "scraps" of turkey and they ran out of mashed potatoes. I have frequently entertained business associates in the past at the Chart House and have been happy with the service and food. Good Food...High Price! – Raves and rants...here we go! We passed the Chart House on the way to OHSU. It looked nice, we stopped. To our surprise it was a nice resturant and included valet parking and a wonderful view of Portland. We were invited to go downstairs for seating because they had a window seat. That was a mistake. The service was friendly...but slow. Twice I had to go to the bar to request something and was assured it was coming...but it didn't. the best view in town – The Charthouse has good seafood, but some dishes are better than others. Go for the wasabi ahi tuna (my boyfriend proclaimed that he would it to his "last meal"). It is divine! I had the snapper, which was cooked wellm juicy and tender, but the sauce over it was bland and did nothing for a fish which needs pep like snapper. Some Concerns – This restaurant suffers from inconsistency in both food and service. We also had a concern with a waiter that deliberately over charged our table (large party) for items that were not ordered. We contacted the manager on duty and he reimbursed us over $50 for the over-charge. This same waiter is still employed there. We continue to 'try' the restaurant in hopes it will stabilize. The view is breath-taking!
Wonderful View and the Seafood was all that we expected – We arrived on time for our reservation and were promptly seated at a corner table next to a window, the view was wonderful. The wait staff was attentive, prompt and helpful and gave us all the time we needed to mull over their extensive menu and wine list. We both had a delicious salad, seafood and wine by the glass. Unjust Reviews – Well, after reading the posted reviews from 2002 and forward I was skeptical however after dinning I was reminded that people tend to complain more than compliment. The view is amazing near sunset and the service was excellent. The general "lines" used to entise guest sounded rehearsed however the staff were personable and appeared to enjoy working there. What Happened??? – Returned after 14 years only to find no "aloha spirit", but the name was still Chart House? The staff was dressed in generic black and white. (blah atmosphere) Food was very spendy. On top of that, sides ala carte?? This adds quite a bit to the bill. No "Surf 'n Turf"? Seems the menu has gotten trendy. Hospitality was poor. We were never greeted by a manager like the old days. Will find a new favorite spot now that we're back in Portland.
Amazing Views Believe it or not, the first time we visited the Chart House it was dark and stormy. Our experience with this fine dining establishment was not hampered even without the amazing views it offers on a clear day. If you have a special night out, whether it is to take out that special guest or ask your girlfriend to be your wife… this is the place to make it happen.
