I had the worst customer experience in my life at the Virginia Hospital Center of any visit to any hospital. I am 74 years old, with asthma, high blood pressure, arthritic knees, and a history of pericarditis. I believe that the negligent service I encountered endangered my health. Failure to remedy these problems endangers the health of patients with concerning health conditions, handicaps, and the elderly. Further, I believe that some of the deficiencies I describe violate, among other things, the legal requirements for... read more
Dr. Charlotte B. Platner is truly an angel. She helped me through a very scary experience with ovarian torsion. I went to the VHC ER with severe right lower quadrant abdominal pain, and she quickly took action. Dr. Platner performed a laparoscopy and a right oophorectomy. I’m so grateful she took care of me—her compassion, skill, and quick decision-making truly saved my life. I will always appreciate her and the wonderful care I received at VHC.
Patient communication for surgery is horrendous. Information received less than 24 hours prior to surgery. Never informed of medical devices needed on discharge. Never received items needed for prep. Never received link or knew about pre-admit paperwork. Told may be kept overnight but no one knew for sure. Nothing on patient portal as alleged. Horrible experience unless uncertainty doesn’t affect you. NOTE: this is about communication, not about medical care.
Extremely ill educated support staff at the front desk.
My spouse was recently treated with back surgery at VHC. She has Parkinson's disease. Her recovery while there was hampered by nursing staff not administering her time critical Parkinson's medications. She ended up using her personal supply of these meds, and had to instruct numerous nursing staff on how to administer them in a timely fashion. VHC also mishandled scheduling post operative home physical therapy. VHC, despite the high ratings posted throughout the hospital, has serious training and communication issues that... read more
In 2013 I lost my father in this institution. Not only due to negligence but also due to racial discrimination and hatred of nurses that were involved. He lost his life during a colonoscopy procedure that went wrong. A nurse came to me and my mother anonymously to let us know that it could very well have been prevented and that she would advise us to open a case for medical malpractice. I spoke to the doctor involved, I asked her if it could have been prevented and she said that was the question they asked themselves after t... read more
