Refusing housing to Pacific Islanders and being so publicly foul to justify it is not only morally unacceptable but also illegal under federal and state fair housing laws. Singling out Pacific Islanders in this manner perpetuates harmful stereotypes and violates the Fair Housing Act, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, and national origin. As a Tongan and proud member of the Polynesian community, I was deeply hurt and disturbed to see a discriminatory sign displayed at Cedar Springs Estates. The sign explicitly targets people of Pacific Islander and Hawaiian Native origin, including Samoans and Tongans, and states they will be “automatically rejected” as applicants.
