Shout out to Joshua who saved the day . . . we had ghost flushing . . . . truly, that's what it's called. When the water closet empties at two in the morning, I don't actually care what it's called :) Josh kindly offered two attempts to solve the issue though we ended up with the final solution of a new, grand, tall ( 17" ) model.
