Editorial fromOddly enough, the titular ingredient can scarcely be discerned on the menu at Butter, an ambitious dining room situated over a trendy subterranean drink-and-dance scene (the Birch Lounge). The decor could be called Adirondack-chic, with…

Great steak beautiful design – I went to Butter last week for restaurant week and was surprised at how good the food was. I always read about it in the paper as being a "hotspot" and decided to fianally check it out with my girlfriend. Although i was disappointed that there werent any celebrities i was delightfully surprised at how good the food was and the service was great too. I highly recommend it. And the design was amazing to boot!
Not Good – We had a reservation here on a Tuesday night and they made us wait an additional 20 minutes for a bad table downstairs which is the equivalent of a loud bad lounge. If they walk you down there refuse the table. The attitude up front is as if the place is Per Se when it is just a wannabe 'me-too' attempt at a trendy restaurant. The food was fine but the non-kitchen staff are really doing the chefs and owners a disservice.
Avoid monday nights! – This Place needs to get a grip. Me and my wonderful boyfriend waited in line to get in on Monday for a damn drink but unfortunately we could not because of the doorman who turned out to be a scumbag. He was letting mainly guys in which was pretty pathetic. I am really mad because this has been my first experience not getting in a New York bar. New York City is one of the most beautiful and friendly places where people like the doorman(Matt) should not be working in such environment. Making a couple wai... read more
Service and attitude are a big turn-off... – My experience was during the Summer 2006 Restaurant Week. The food was very good but the service was terrible -- up to 20 minutes to get acknowledged, and long waits between courses. No one ever asked if I wanted a drink or coffee. And the temperature was freezing! The worst part was an automatic 20% tip policy. I sent my comments to the restaurant through its website, and in a letter to the general manager. Consistent with their past behavior, they never acknowledged me and my co... read more
Average Food, but Atmosphere & Ambience Make up for it – The restaurant is absolutely beautiful - wonderful atmosphere and just an overal cool environment. The food was very average, but there was one thing that made the entire dinner worthwhile - The RASBERRY BEIGNETS!!! Wow, our entire table went nuts for these and ordered another round - probably one of the most amazing tasting things I've ever put in my mouth. I would go back if only for those! If you are looking for an amazing culinary experience, this is not the restau... read more
Not worth the price – Butter was a highly anticipated night for me and my boyfriend on his birthday. Much to our delight the Ambiance was pure bliss, the host and waitress were both very nice, but not helpful when pairing the wine with the meals we ordered. In the end my anticipation turned to disappointment. We ended up overpaying for over cooked Venison and unimpressive sides. Dont waste a big night out on a place that wont please you in the end.
WE HAD SQUASH SOUP W/SIDE OF POPCORN ON THANKSGIVING EVE. IT WAS AWESOME!!! – BUTTER WAS AWESOME. THE DECOR IS UNIQUE AND THE SERVICE WAS IMPECCABLE. THE FOOD WAS GREAT AND I WOULD DEFINITELY HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT.
Great place for people watching. – A fun, hip place. I wasn't too crazy about the food. Had the pasta and chicken pie as an appetizer and thought it was just okay. For entree I had their grilled halibut, and I tried my friend's lamb. Both were good, but not amazing. I can't remember what I had for dessert but it was something chocolate-like. Not sure if I would go back for the food.
Why is this place so trendy now? – I ate here years ago when it opened and barely remember it. The food was mediocre and the atmosphere was nice, but nothing to write home about. I have been shocked recently to keep hearing that it is now a celebrity hotspot. My experience was that it was a nice, passable restaurant that I wouldn't go back to (too many others in NYC I like better.)
