I do not think the grouper was actually grouper. As a Tampa native and someone who eats yellow edge, black, red, gag, and other common Florida types often, the fish was mild but veiny with small black veins that are uncommon in grouper. I was unimpressed by the batter on the fried fish. I found it to fry well but lacked flavor. The Caesar salad (I had with fried "grouper" on it) was strange; it had tomato, sliced sandwich style, and onions, sliced again, sandwich style. The dressing was ok. The silverware was plastic. I really wanted to like this place, especially for having a michelin star. I eat a lot of seafood and love creative takes on food. I got the lobster corndog and my fiancé got the Cesar salad with grouper. The lobster corndog, the batter wasn’t corn batter and it was beer battered with some IPA beer. Lobster is a rather delicate flavor and definitely isn’t something you beer batter, especially with the beer they used. The flavor of the hops completely overpowered the lobster making it bitter. I wanted to love this place after reading the reviews and seeing the line out the door, but I was underwhelmed. I had the grouper cheeks and they were hot & fresh, but lacked seasoning. Portion size was great. The sauce that comes with it was tasty, but the fish really needed seasoning. I ordered ahead and the wait was still 20 mins OVER the time it said it would be ready. It’s a small establishment with nice outside seating. I didn’t see more than 3 people on the staff so maybe that was the reason for the long wait. I will ... read more

Went to this spot to get their Grouper sandwich. It did not disappoint. The fish was fresh, the staff was friendly, and it was a nice day out so sitting outside at the picnic tables was a really welcome treat. For the hotter days, they do have indoor air conditioned seating. If you live in or are visiting the Tampa area, Big Ray's is a must-try!
