Laws on how to become a notary and the duties of a notary vary fairly widely from state to state. However, in every state in which a non-lawyer is authorized to become a notary, there is a law that forbids the notary from offering any type of legal advice.
Notaries may sometimes attach a signed and sealed certificate to authenticate photocopies as genuine. Why? The certificate verifies they personally made the photocopy from an original document or they witnessed the copy being made.

The American Society of Notaries makes this crucial point: “A notary’s ability to fully evaluate a document signer’s identification, basic understanding of the transaction, and free will would be diminished by any condition other than physical presence of the signer.”
