A.R. Valentien is the sort of lunch room I always appreciate: quiet, well-paced, and confident without feeling managed. We sat on the terrace, and the setting over the pool and Torrey Pines grounds was exactly right: relaxed, polished, and very Southern California in the best way. The service was excellent. Everything about this experience was amazing. To start, I walked in at 6:30 on a Wednesday and was able to sit at the bar and get a seat right away. The views of the Torrey Pines and the sunset while I sat there were incredible. The bartender, Sam, was outstanding and made great recommendations. When I decided to order, I didn’t even look at the menu—I just relied on Sam. He recommended the duck, which was phenomenal. The atmosphere is one of old world golf club lounge - not surprising. A bit staid - but the outdoor deck looks awesome ! My scallops were wonderful. Wine choice was great. Enjoyed a pear salad. The little gluten free cornbread inspired starter surprise was delicious. We will return. Finally - the service was friendly, knowledgeable, and appropriately attentive.

I don’t usually write reviews, but after my experience at AR Valentien I felt like I had to. I came in specifically craving a sandwich I’d had before, only to find out it was no longer on the menu. Before I even had a chance to be disappointed, our server Brandon had already taken it upon himself to go back and talk to Chef Owen about it. This place is amazing! The food was absolutely incredible (especially the scallops). Our server was also so sweet. I didn’t catch her name, but she was a young black woman. She deserves a raise! My boyfriend and her worked together to give me an amazing proposal and I could not be more grateful. The rest of the staff was so helpful as well. I dropped my napkin on the floor and a staff member saw from inside and came all the way outside to bring me a new one. Will definitely be returning.
