I would not recommend Dr. West as a primary care physician. I have found her to be incredibly harsh/blunt, uncompassionate, and greedy. I remember going to her for a check-up for soreness, and I asked her about my acne medication. However, she told me that she could not do two things at once and I need to schedule a separate appointment. On another occasion, I asked her during my physical if I could get a prescription for anxiety medication, and she told me that I need to schedule a separate appointment. Dr. West recommended that I get the Covid vaccination when it was made available to those who are medically compromised. I have end stage renal disease. She is a warm and conscientious physician who is always available when I need her medical attention.
Dr. West and this Duke primary care are more interested in prescribing expensive tests than patients’ wellbeing (physically and financially). If you want to pay $1000 for a primary care visit, go here. Otherwise, find other pcp.
Dr. West is always comprehensive in her assessing any medical conditions I present. She is compassionate and a willing participant in my care.
In 4 out of 5 appts, Dr. West would mention how she has other patients waiting and need to wrap up with me quickly. At the annual visits, if I asked more than 2 questions (all of which are short e.g. is this mole ok/should I see a dermatologist), she would educate me on how annuals are for health maintenance and I need to make another appt for any problems. I've observed a number of primary care physicians, all of whom are busy, and handle far more complicated patients in a better manner.
Im not sure if it's just Dr. West or Duke Timberlyn's practice to always push for expensive tests for patients while there are other cheaper alternatives. I've received 2 tests that are around $500 and was extremely unhappy that I was not notified of the costs even though I have expressed these concerns. If you go to Duke Timberlyn, be aware and check every single thing they want to order.
