The front desk clerk who checked us in barely spoke English. I had booked 2 rooms and she had trouble finding the second room. The day before we checked in they charged a deposit to my debit card. In 35 years of business and personal travel I have never seen this practice. I've seen holds placed against credit cards for incidentals but never an outright charge, and certainly never prior to checking in.
